“The Erin Brockovich of the military.”
“A Role Model For Fearless Journalism”
My investigations into government sequestration and sexual violence in the military have resulted in nearly-immediate changes to federal policy and law, and have been featured in Vanity Fair, The Center for Investigative Reporting, and on the front page of The New York Times. My reporting has been recognized with two Fourth Estate Awards, three Edward R. Murrow Awards, an Overseas Press Club Award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Journalism Award.
Leading “Brave” and “Vital” Conversations
My journey from combat-wounded Marine to newsroom leader taught me that veterans, military families, and journalists share more in common than most people realize. Together, we are largely misunderstood by the communities we serve, and while it may be in different ways, we all play a vital role in our democracy. I enjoy leading conversations with audiences that range from the Ivy League and corporate headquarters to military bases and middle-school classrooms.
Restoring Public Trust In The Fourth Estate
In 2016, I founded The War Horse to educate the public on the human impact of military service and restore the public’s trust in the Fourth Estate. Since then, our newsroom has become a renowned distribution portal considered not just important to veterans and their families, but vital by prominent journalists, advocates, and military officials. For this work, I was recognized as the first enlisted recipient of the Gen. John A. Lejeune Award for Leadership.
